Purpose
The Tellus project is a survey of heavy metals, organic carbon and pH in topsoils in Ireland. Topsoil is the upper surface layer of the soil and this survey measures the amount and type of chemicals in these surface soils. These chemicals can be natural or man-made. This allows us to map different soil types and learn about how they were made.
Deeper topsoil samples were taken from the 'East Central' (G7) and 'South East' (G9) areas, and tested for their chemical make-up.
This data will help in land-use planning, mapping of natural resources, help understand impact of farming on the environment and aid policy. Higher amounts of some chemicals in soils may also affect human and livestock health.

Version 1.0

Summary
Soil samples were collected in block G7 (East Central) between 2020 and 2021, and in block G9 (South East) between 2021 and 2022, and tested for the chemicals that make up the soil. Over 2800 samples were taken from areas such as meadows, fields, uplands, parks and pastures. The samples were taken using a hand auger from depths between 0.35 m and 0.50 m and were collected into plastic bags.
The <2 mm fraction of the sample was sent to a lab to be tested for chemicals and the results were given as mg/kg (milligram per kilogram) or % (percent).
Data are censored to half detection limit (HDL) where below Lower Limit of Detection (LLD). For elements where a large proportion of observations fall below the accredited LLD, non-accredited, uncensored below-LLD data are also provided (B, Ta, Pd and Pt).
Conditioned pH data are presented separately. Data are calculated using the linear regression relationship between the relevant block of data and the mean values for the pH SRMs for blocks up to G6 (G7S Intercept: 0.38; Slope: 0.954. G9S Intercept: 0.289; Slope: 1.01).
Users are cautioned that no conditioning or correction factors have been applied to the data, other than for pH. Therefore boundary affects for some elements may be apparent if mapping alongside other Tellus datasets.
It is a vector dataset. Vector data portray the world using points, lines, and polygons (areas). This soil geochemistry data is given as points. Each point gives information about where the sample was collected, the type and value of the chemicals that were tested. This includes:
