snippet: Geological Heritage Sites are important as they provide clues to our past and help us to find out how the earth has evolved. It is vital that they are recorded and protected. Geological heritage includes our natural history and scenic sites such as caves, mountains and coastal areas. They are vital for learning purposes. The sites are real life examples which show the processes of how our landscape was created and so help us understand the principles of geology. The data is a useful resource to all levels of education from school children and on to third level colleges and research. Future research which may help to resolve current problems, is possible only if these sites exist for future study. Local authorities use the data to promote these sites as places to visit. Also, the data is of use to the tourism sector. The sites attract tourists which in turn supports local businesses and brings in money to local communities.
