Description: A borehole is any hole drilled or dug into the ground. The hole is usually deep, narrow and round. The material (soil and or rock) from the hole is collected and tested in a laboratory to find out the structure and type of the soil and or rock beneath the ground. A borehole record or log is a written description of the material that comes out of the ground as a result of drilling a borehole. The boreholes are drilled into the ground to different depths. These boreholes were drilled to find minerals, oil, gas, water or to find out more about geology. We store the samples (core) and these are available to view by appointment. We are in the process of scanning all the core and the images will be available online when completed. This map shows the location of the boreholes drilled in Ireland from 1957 to 2002. They were submitted to the GSI from mineral exploration companies. This boreholes map is to the scale 1:50,000. This means it should be viewed at that scale. When printed at that scale 1cm on the map relates to a distance of 500m.It is a vector dataset. Vector data portray the world using points, lines, and polygons (areas). The borehole data is shown as points. Each point holds information on the location of the borehole (X and Y coordinates), coordinate source, Borehole ID (borehole identifier), a unique, record identifier, the length of the hole (meters and feet), the angle the hole was drilled, azimuth (direction the hole was drilled), county, townland, prospecting license number (PL) (current and retired), year hole drilled and document details such as description and URL to download a PDF of the borehole log.
